The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Oscar-Winning Biopic Performances
Who do the Oscar hopefuls from this year's prestige biopics need to measure up to?
6. Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos in "Monster" (2003)
The near-simultaneous release of Nick Broomfield’s documentary “Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer” was helpful in gauging just how successfully South African stunner Theron had morphed into the ungainly lesbian prostitute-turned-murderer, but all the fuss made over the actress’s remarkable physical transformation, it’s the subtler details of expression and body language – watch the gauche, would-be feminine way she slings a handbag over her shoulder – that stick in my mind and keep this comfortably far from stunt-performance territory. A no-brainer winner in its year – or most years, for that matter.
