The 2005 Best Actor field was one of those unfortunate cases where the standard of nominees was so high that it should have been a dogfight, but one performance coasted to victory anyway: popular sentiment may now lie with Heath Ledger, but rewatch Hoffman’s witty, thorny, masterfully calibrated interpretation of one of American literature’s glassiest figures, wholly free of affected writer-type neurosis, and try and tell me he didn’t earn every inch of that statuette.
