The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Oscar-Winning Biopic Performances
Who do the Oscar hopefuls from this year's prestige biopics need to measure up to?
7. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote in "Capote" (2005)
The 2005 Best Actor field was one of those unfortunate cases where the standard of nominees was so high that it should have been a dogfight, but one performance coasted to victory anyway: popular sentiment may now lie with Heath Ledger, but rewatch Hoffman’s witty, thorny, masterfully calibrated interpretation of one of American literature’s glassiest figures, wholly free of affected writer-type neurosis, and try and tell me he didn’t earn every inch of that statuette. One year later, Toby Jones’s fine Capote portrait in “Infamous” felt like Reader’s Digest by comparison.
