A new year, a new reserve of hope for the multiplex
5. "Gravity" (Alfonso Cuarón, Universal Pictures - November 21)
Alfonso Cuarón fought for "Gravity" and to some degree that’s all I need to know. Cuarón’s use of the medium is visually stunning, unique and ever reflective of the story he is telling. In his latest, an astronaut (George Clooney) and a medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) are on a “routine” spacewalk when their craft is destroyed and they are left tethered to nothing but one other, spiraling out into recesses of space. The structural and cinematic dexterity necessary to effectively capture what (in all likelihood) are the unthinkable last moments of these lives will be fascinating to watch unfold. --Roth Cornet
