4. "A Star is Born" (George Cukor, 1954)
Such a hardy Hollywood chestnut is this classic story of a star couple ruptured by their opposing career trajectories (hers up, his cruelly down) that this seemingly definitive version was itself a remake of a remake – and that’s to say nothing of the countless unofficial retreads of the narrative that have somewhat chipped away at its value. (Why hello, “Glitter.”) But this one retains an ever-surprising brute force thanks to its all-stops-out performances and lavish appreciation of its own craft. Good luck topping this, Clint and Beyoncé.
