More movie-producer drama, though this one’s a rather less sympathetic protagonist. Kirk Douglas gives one of his best performances as ruthless Hollywood shark Jonathan Shields, the film detailing his ascent via the stories of the actress, director and writer he uses along the way. Minnelli and Douglas revisited this subject matter a decade later with the fine “Two Weeks in Another Town,” but this vinegar-splahed-melodrama, rewarded with five Oscars, is the real keeper.
