Sometimes the obvious choices are the right ones, and Wilder’s inky-black comedy of barely separated ambition, failure and delusion in Tinseltown has become the go-to industry parable wholly on its own merits. Gloria Swanson’s Norma Desmond already encapsulated a whole generation of previous movie stars before becoming an enduring symbol of the profession in general, its narrative structure is repeatedly recycled to this day, and much of its dialogue (“Ready for my close-up, Mr. De Mille,” “It’s the pictures that got small”) has entered everyday showbiz parlance.
