The dead walk: Our 10 favorite zombie movies
How does Brad Pitt's 'World War Z' measure up to the classics?
5. '28 Days Later' (2002)
There is a very good case to be made that "28 Days Later" isn't a zombie movie at all, but is in fact a contagion film. After all, he "zombies" are not, in fact, dead (which is rather important in designating one a zombie), but are simply sick with a virus spread by freed lab chimps run amok. Still, this movie is perhaps the best non-zombie zombie movie out there. This is an utterly contemporary film, and not just because it has fast zombies. When Jim scans a wall of missing persons notices, it's hard not to think of news footage from real events. Danny Boyle shot this cheap, fast and dirty, which lends an unnerving realism to what unfolds. It's also that rare scary movie with an ending that just might be hopeful (unless you watch the DVD alternatives), which seems less like a cop-out than a hard won relief.
