"Ben and Kate" isn't necessarily all the way there yet, but it has a likable pilot and all of the necessary elements to be really terrific. In Dana Fox, it has a creator with personal stories to tell, stories that are really funny when she recounts them. In Nat Faxon and Dakota Johnson, it has solid leads with an immediate sibling chemistry. In Maggie Jones, it has a child star who's both adorable and capable of getting (and earning) laughs. In Echo Kellum and Lucy Punch, it has supporting players prepared to either steal or anchor scenes. The pilot made me smile. I'm hoping subsequent episodes make me laugh.
