The 15 Most anticipated fall movies
Release date: October 26
Why it's anticipated: The Wachowskis (who co-directed with "Run Lola Run" director Tom Tykwer) haven't helmed a film since 2008's "Speed Racer," a generally lambasted box-office flop that nonetheless boasts a staunch cult of admirers. Based on early reviews out of Toronto, "Cloud Atlas" could be heading for a similarly polarizing reception, though with a $100 million budget (the majority of which was raised independently) the film's investors are no doubt hoping the film's narrative audacity pays off. And it is audacious; based on the David Mitchell novel of the same name, "Cloud Atlas" features multiple interwoven storylines, an epic 164-minute running time and a sci-fi fantasy universe that will be unfamiliar to most potential viewers. On the plus side, the Wachowskis still boast considerable name value 13 years after "The Matrix," and with long wait times between releases there's nevertheless a considerable amount of hype leading up to the film's release. The question is whether that buzz can translate into profitability.
