Once Upon a Time in America

Okay, so maybe it's a bit of a cheat to top this list with a film that already premiered at Cannes... 28 years ago. But at least 40 minutes of this long-awaited restoration of Sergio Leone's studio-compromised gangland masterpiece will be new to us: a smaller proportion of this mammoth 269-minute edit than it would be with most films, granted, but tantalizingly new nonetheless. This is the version of the film that Leone had envisioned all along, before Warner bosses demanded cuts and eventually took it out of his hands. Whether it's an improvement on the 220-minute edition widely adored by critics is part of the excitement here, but it's hard to imagine there'll be many (or any) better films on the Croisette this year.
