Terrence Malick's dissection of men at war rang as pretentious to some in 1998, and 13 years later, "The Tree of Life" kept that same boring chorus going. For others, there's a lot to unpack in his work, and this tone poem spun out of the work of James Jones has stood the test as a vital vision.
