NBC renews 'Community,' forces out Dan Harmon
When is the renewal of a critical darling with a loud and adoring fanbase not automatically a cause for celebration? When the show responsible for generating all this passion is coming back, but the man responsible for the show isn't. NBC ordered a fourth season of "Community" from Sony, but Sony declined to renew the contract of the series' creator and main voice, Dan Harmon, apparently in the belief the show might become less weird and more commercial with someone else — in this case, sitcom vets Moses Port and David Guarascio — at the helm. "Community" was supposed to return in exile on Fridays in October, but NBC changed its mind at the last minute and will bring the show back in its once-and-future Thursday at 8 timeslot on February 7. Whether the show can succeed without Harmon, creatively or commercially, will be one of the more interesting stories to watch in 2013.
