2. 'The Girl in the Fireplace'
Doctor: David Tennant
Companion: Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith
Why we Love it: Even the Doctor needs an old-fashioned love affair to remind him that he's capable of getting attached. "The Girl in the Fireplace" pairs Tenth Doctor David Tennant with his then, real-life girlfriend Sophia Myles, who plays Reinette (a.k.a. Louis XV's mistress Madame de Pompadour). The chemistry between these two -- and the fact that it's Steven Moffat's only script of the season -- makes this one of the standout episodes in Series 2. From the moment the Doctor meets Reinette in a time window, a two-way portal that's inside her fireplace in 18th century France, they are connected. The Doctor saves her from evil androids throughout the episode, at one point jumping into a costume ball on horseback in a scene that is Tennant at his most gallant, but in the end, it's Reinette who saves him by showing him the meaning of love.
