Summer TV Winners and Losers
Winner: 'Orange Is The New Black'
Look: we don't know what the ratings are for this, or any other Netflix show. We're not even 100% sure at this point that Netflix's own executives are sure about how well this or any of their other originals are doing. What we know is that this prison dramedy from "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan was not only easily the best of the Netflix originals so far, but one of the best TV shows of the year: a thoughtful, funny, poignant, extremely generous look at life inside a women's prison. At first we saw this world through the eyes of privileged white hipster Piper (Taylor Schilling), but "Orange" quickly spread the wealth, and the point of view, among a deep, diverse cast of characters. Again, we can't speak to ratings, but where people seemed to be plowing through "House of Cards" or "Arrested Development" as a contest, or a chore, "Orange" was the show we consistently heard that people kept marathoning because they just didn't want to stop.
