Summer TV Winners and Losers
Winner: 'Breaking Bad'
The Emmy-winning drama returned for its final batch of episodes with ratings that may have made the executives at AMC wish they hadn't been so quick a couple of years ago to tell Vince Gilligan to wrap things up in 16 episodes. The final premiere averaged 5.9 million viewers, by far the series' biggest audience ever, and up an absurd 102 percent over last summer's premiere. Whether you credit Netflix, On Demand or other measures of catching up, or simply word of mouth peaking at a point where nobody wants to wait to see these last 8 episodes, it's an amazing jump. On top of that, the episodes we've seen so far have been among the most gripping and powerful of the series to date. Walter White does not seem to be going out with a whimper.
