Summer TV Winners and Losers
Winner: 'Under the Dome'
Winners don't get much bigger than this. CBS' Stephen King adaptation has been the summer's breakout scripted smash, regularly doubling the audience for such accepted "successes" as "Rookie Blue" and drawing more than 5X the weekly audience of NBC's "Siberia," which was a last-second acquisition meant to somewhat blunt the "Dome" impact. In addition to remaining a huge performer when DVR numbers are included, "Under the Dome" has remained remarkably stable with its live ratings despite a building less-than-glowing critical consensus and despite the ongoing CBS/TWC dispute preventing a sizable chunk of potential viewership from watching. In addition to spawning an inevitable second season, "Under the Dome" has also helped bolster network confidence that "limited" and "event" programming is the way forward. CBS, for example, will have the Steven Spielberg-produced "Extant" ready to join "Under the Dome" next summer.
