Loser: White House Down
Sony Pictures executives must still be scratching their heads wondering why the formula for "White House Down" didn't click with audiences. The action thriller starred Channing Tatum who was coming off a 2012 featuring three $100 million plus hits and Jamie Foxx, who had just toplined the biggest movie in his career, "Django Unchained." Yes, director Roland Emmerich found little audience interest for his passion project "Anonymous," but when in "Hollywood" mode he traditionally delivers a $100 million U.S. gross guaranteed. Instead, "White House Down" was eviscerated by the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy The Heat" and ended up with just $72 million ($134 million worldwide). Considering it cost $150 million, that makes "White House Down" not just one of the biggest bombs of the summer, but the entire year.
