Summer Box Office Winners and Losers: 'Man of Steel,' Will Smith, 'After Earth'
Plus: Horror and comedies make their summertime mark
Losers: 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation
DreamWorks Animation made a tough call last year when the independent studio decided to end its distribution contract with Paramount and move on to a new partner, 20th Century Fox. Fox has had great success with their Blue Sky produced animated films, but both companies fell flat on their faces this summer. Following the surprise success of DWA's "The Croods" this past Spring, Fox released "Epic" over the memorial day weekend and it ended up with just $107.3 million domestic and $253 million worldwide. That's the worst results for any Blue Sky animated film ever. Less than two months later DWA released "Turbo" which found just $78 million domestic and an eyebrow raising $148.9 million (to date) internationally. With a production budget of $135 million it ranks up there as one of DWA's worst performers ever. Should both companies be concerned about how this arrangement is working out? You bet they should.
