Summer Box Office Winners and Losers: 'Man of Steel,' Will Smith, 'After Earth'
Plus: Horror and comedies make their summertime mark
Winner: 'World War Z'
Paramount insists "World War Z" cost just $190 million and based on that total it needed to earn about $600 million worldwide to hit the red (become profitable) before pay TV, DVD and other ancillaries kicked in. Well, the studio has completely convinced the media it's a smash even though technically it isn't. To be honest though, no one thought it would earn more than $300 million global after the initial terrible buzz. So, OK, Paramount. It's a hit. Fine. Just don't think we're gonna roll over when you try to convince us the sky is yellow, OK?
