Summer Box Office Predictions: 'Avengers,' 'Dark Knight Rises,' 'Snow White'
Where will 'Men in Black 3' and 'Prometheus' fall?
U.S. opening: June 8
Comparables: "I Am Legend" (2007) - $256 million, "Aliens" (1986) - $85 million, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011) - $176.7 million
Prediction: $150 million
Lowdown: Many moviefans may think this figure is low, but they are over estimating the appeal of Ridley Scott's return to Sci-Fi. Unless its miraculously rated PG-13 (unlikely), "Prometheus" will have a hard time playing to four quadrants. The only real comparable is last year's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." That film was originally aimed at men, but critical acclaim and excellent word of mouth helped to expand its base and over perform to industry expectations. It also happened to be a teenage friendly PG-13. Fox has launched a stellar marketing campaign for "Prometheus" so far (one of their best in years), but they'll need some special magic to get women into the theater for this one.
