Summer Box Office Predictions: 'Avengers,' 'Dark Knight Rises,' 'Snow White'
Where will 'Men in Black 3' and 'Prometheus' fall?
2. "The Avengers"
U.S. opening: May 4
Comparables: "Iron Man" (2008) - $318 million, "Iron Man 2" (2010) - $312.4 million, "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) - $234.3 million, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2" (2011) - $381 million
Prediction: $385 million
Lowdown: In all honesty, there really are no true comparable films to "The Avengers." The picture is already pre-polling for the biggest opening of all time which would break "Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2's" $160 million three-day debut. The question is how many times will the fans go and see it? Will it require third and fourth viewings? If so, it could easily win the summer race and end up with well past $400 million. Marvel movies don't have a great track record in that department, however, which explains our $385 million estimate.
