Summer Box Office Predictions 2013: 'Man of Steel,' 'Iron Man 3,' 'Despicable Me 2'
Who makes the top 10?
5. Star Trek Into Darkness
Release date: May 17
Comparison: "Star Trek" ($257 million)
Prediction: $230 million
Why: There's a simple reason "Star Trek Into Darkness" has no other comparable than the last "Star Trek" film. That's because J.J. Abrams' reboot hit box office heights Paramount hadn't seen in the franchise for decades. The question is how mainstream did that make Star Trek as a property? How many moviegoers saw it based on the buzz of the reviews and will they really be enticed to boldly go where no one has gone before…again? It's a tough question to answer. Paramount is hoping the hardcore fans provide a bigger opening than "Star Trek's" $75 million and it becomes the repeat Sci-Fi choice until "Man of Steel" debuts June 14. Our guess is that means a somewhat smaller overall gross than the first installment, but that Abrams and friends have crafted a quality enough flick to crack $200 million again.
