Please let these movie franchises die a peaceful death
Do we really want more 'Terminator,' 'G.I. Joe' or 'Die Hard' movies?
Movies: "Paranormal Activity" (2009), "Paranormal Activity 2" (2010), "Paranormal Activity 3" (2011), "Paranormal Activity 4" (2012), "Paranormal Activity 5" (2014)
Upcoming movies: There are no further films in the pipeline, but a Latino version entitled "The Oxnard Tapes" is reportedly in the works.
Why: The first "Paranormal Activity" was a damn good low-budget horror flick that felt like a refreshing antidote to the depressingly gory (and just plain awful) "Saw" sequels then dominating the Halloween-season release schedule. Unsurprisingly, Paramount saw mad dollar signs and proceeded to greenlight a follow-up every single year, though audience fatigue could finally be seen with last year's installment, which brought in only about half of what its predecessor managed at the U.S. box-office. Still, $138 million worldwide is a whole hell of a lot for a film that cost only $5 million to produce, and so we have "Paranormal Activity 5" set for release next January. But every gravy train must reach the end of the track eventually, and if the box-office downslide continues we may finally be rid of a series that has long since passed its sell-by date.
