Year first released: 1998
Director: Alex Proyas
Why we'd consider: A relative box office dud when it was released, Alex Proyas' eerie and haunting mixture of sci-fi and noir stands as a glorious piece of world-building, thanks in no small part to Dariusz Wolski's cinematography and Patrick Tatopoulos's ambitious production design. The lackluster CGI climax probably wouldn't be improved by a high-tech overhaul, but Tatopoulos' urban dystopia was meant to be immersive. Too many viewers have only discovered "Dark City" on DVD and BluRay, but a 15th anniversary re-release might showcase just how far ahead of its time it was.
