Katy Perry vs. Lady Gaga: The Singles
Retro power pop: "Edge of Glory" vs. "Teenage Dream"
Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” takes listeners back to the ‘80s and a time when full-throated divas like Laura Branigan and Pat Benatar ruled the charts. Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is more a blast from the past lyrically than stylistically, although that snaky synth beat certainly had its moment in the ‘90s. Unlike Perry’s warning of “don’t ever look back,” both artists do with winning effect, but a slight edge goes to Lady Gaga if, for nothing else, she captures Clarence Clemons’ last saxophone solo on record.
