4. "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999)

The role: Dr. William Harford

Nominated for: Blockbuster Award (Favorite Actor - Drama/Romance)

Won: nothing

Thoughts: Cruise's performance in Stanley Kubrick's swan song is as underrated as the film itself, because it's as understated as the film itself. (It may be strange to call a near three-hour film that shot for over a year "understated," but that's what it is.) A lot of people praised then-wife Nicole Kidman's performance in the film that year, but it always seemed to me that Cruise was more natural, internalizing a lot and letting it out in just the right measure.
