With 'Magic Mike' on the way, a look at the actors who excelled in the director's work
7. Andie MacDowell in "sex, lies and videotape" (1989)
Another name you wouldn't expect to find in any "best performances" lists, Andie MacDowell has become something of a punchline in critical circles -- her hilariously wooden closing line in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is justly infamous. It's easy to forget, then, how bracingly brittle and intelligent her breakout performance in Soderbergh's Palme d'Or-winning debut feature was: as a rigidly unhappy housewife experiencing a belated sexual awakening, the actress's somewhat tight performance demeanor has never been put to more effective use. Best Actress honors from the LA Critics and the Spirit Awards deservedly followed, never to be repeated.
