2. "Batman" (Production Designer: Anton Furst)
The Oscar-winning design for "Batman" stemmed from a single line in the script: "Gotham City, as if hell had burst through the sidewalk and kept going." The interpretation from Burton and the late Anton Furst yielded one of the most exotic design jobs in cinema history, accented with film noir and art deco here, German expressionism and modern art there. Gadgetry, vehicles, it's all here, and all turned up to 11. (And all of it somewhat ruined by Burton's id-induced re-imagining on the film's sequel.)
