'Game of Thrones' (HBO)
The Moment: The Red Wedding (from 'The Rains of Castamere')
After the sudden and unexpected death of Ned Stark at the end of Season One, you'd think 'Game of Thrones' fans would know better than to pin their hopes on any one character, but that's the bitch about hope, she just keeps hanging in there. And sure, in a normal show, the son of the murdered hero would be the triumphant victor because that's how narratives work dammit! But Martin once again shattered that assumption with the death of near half the remaining Stark clan in one fell swoop, cleaving a path of anguish and rage through television fans and a whoop of schadenfreude-esque glee and sorrow from in-the-know readers of the books. Bloody and savage, with even more brutal death than in the novels (Talisa's book alter ego Jeyne Westerling is alive and well), HBO pushed the limits of how much wholesale slaughter an audience could tolerate. But don't worry, it's all rainbows and puppies from here…no, no. That's a lie. Apologies.
