Essential Philip Seymour Hoffman performances
Truman Capote in 'Capote'
It's not hard to caricature Truman Capote. Heck, Truman Capote caricatured Truman Capote for much of his life and was quite successful at it. The challenge that Philip Seymour Hoffman faced was how to deliver the high voice and the mannerisms, capture the wit and the brilliance, but find a human core beyond those myriad external traits. Hoffman's Oscar win wasn't for mimicking a famously flamboyant author. What he won the Oscar for was for digging deep, deep into what made Capote write about the subjects of the "In Cold Blood," the degree to which he was using them, they degree to which he was manipulating them and then the degree to which writing about these murders took over his life and tore him apart. He makes the Capote character into a real person. You don't have to watch the rest of the movie for this scene to tear you apart.
