Essential Philip Seymour Hoffman performances
Brandt in 'The Big Lebowski'
Remembering that Philip Seymour Hoffman was, at his heart, a character actor, it's worth observing how astounding he could be when playing what was, at least one paper, probably a non-character. Brandt is Lebowski's valet or attache and he has a couple scenes and the reason why you remember this one little character within a sea of huge, memorable characters is because of Brandt's pride, because of his tie-straightening, because of his increased frustration -- polite frustration -- with The Dude. Oh and because of his laugh. This scene is about The Dude meeting Lebowski's sexpot wife. It's about making sure that you remember Bunny's toenail polish. And then it's about Philip Seymour Hoffman stealing the scene with a laugh.
