Essential Philip Seymour Hoffman performances
Jon Savage in 'The Savages'
One of Hoffman's less-showy (but no less-impressive) performances came with Tamara Jenkins' "The Savages," in which he plays a drowsily unhappy professor forced to confront his childhood trauma after the mental breakdown of his elderly father. Oscar was never in the cards for a performance this subtle, but Hoffman did take home an Independent Spirit Award for his deeply-nuanced portrait of a man who wears a lifetime of disappointments on his sleeve. His magnetic interplay with co-star Laura Linney demonstrates how he was often able to bring out the best in his fellow performers as well.
