Emmys 2013 Best and Worst: Neil Patrick Harris, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Merritt Wever and more
Worst: Opening montage and bit
If you bring in Neil Patrick Harris as host, there are certain expectations and I get that the Emmy producers thought it might be fun to cheat those expectations by holding Harris' obligatory song-and-dance number to the middle of the show. And the song in the middle of the show was good, as was the tribute to choreography. Absolutely. But they still had to find a way to open. And... they didn't. A filmed bit may have given Les Moonves a chance to do some acting, but other than that, it was confusing and pointless. Then Harris bombed for a minute or two and Jimmy Kimmel interrupted to let him know that he was bombing and Conan O'Brien did as well. And the whole bit was about how Harris was bombing and how hard it is to host the Emmys. Unfortunately, even the bits that were supposed to be funny bombed. See, the reason why you hire NPH is because he can start the show with a bang. And the reason why you start a show with a bang is because it sets the mood for everything that comes after. This succeeded in setting the mood in all of the wrong ways.
