Emmy Nomination Preview 2013 - Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy
Can Sofia Vergara or Betty White dethrone Julie Bowen?
Mayim Bialik of 'The Big Bang Theory'
Mayim Bialik, "The Big Bang Theory"
Nomination Status: Deserves to stick around.
In Her Favor: It may not have been her funniest work -- she didn't wear a tiara, after all -- but Bialik's performance as Amy navigated her increasing frustration with Sheldon's intimacy issues may have been her best ever. There was a sweet, sadness to the D&D episode that mixed well with the inevitable broad humor and Bialik nailed both sides of the tone. Getting a nomination last year shows that Emmy voters recognize what she's doing here and I'd like to hope that they'd continue to recognize, even if it's become less amusing and more human.
Working Against Her: Human? Ick! Bring on the funny! The tendency is to think that "Big Bang Theory" fans mostly love the nerdsploitation, so when anything becomes more "real" than "cartoonish," they become uncomfortable.
