Emmy Nomination Preview 2013 - Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy
Can Sofia Vergara or Betty White dethrone Julie Bowen?
Cloris Leachman of 'Raising Hope'
Cloris Leachman, "Raising Hope"
Nomination Status: Emmy favorite had some of the year's better showcase episodes.
In Her Favor: I've always been a bit of a Cloris Leachman detractor when it comes to her work on "Raising Hope." The show has reliably settled for easy punchlines when it comes to Maw Maw and the writers have been willing to just let Leachman be crazy and old without giving her a character to play. This season, either Leachman was on her meds and the writers were liberated to give her things to do, or the writers gave Leachman things to do and it liberated her as a performer. The result was Leachman's best season of work. You can go back to the Season 3 premiere to see the change, but for proof of Leachman's actual acting, one need look no further than "Mother's Day," in which she submitted to old age makeup and played her own mother, with predictably wacky results. Nominating Leachman for things has been Emmy complacency in recent years, but this time she deserves a nod.
Working Against Her: After being nominated in the Guest Actress field in 2011, Leachman was snubbed last year when she went up to Supporting. We'll see if Emmy voters can re-notice her and if they'll pay heed to her improved performance.
