Emmy Nomination Preview 2013 - Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Will the four 'Modern Family' men stack the category again?
Max Greenfield of 'New Girl'
Max Greenfield, "New Girl"
Nomination Status: Last year's New Guy got a gift from one of his co-stars.
In His Favor: The focus on "New Girl" shifted this season to give much more emphasis to Jake Johnson's Nick and his slow-evolving relationship with Jess. As a result, many fans felt like Max Greenfield's Schmidt, the breakout character from Season 1, was pushed into the background. This was probably true and, perhaps as a result, Johnson submitted as Lead Actor this year after submitting as Supporting last year. That probably won't help Johnson's chances, but the absence of direct in-house competition -- Sorry, Lamorne Morris -- gives a big boost to Greenfield. Now we can look at Greenfield's performance in episodes like "Chicago" and "Elaine's Big Day" and, especially, "Eggs" and realize that Schmidt may not have been stealing as many scenes, but he was certainly garnering many supporting laughs. Oh and if you love Fat Schmidt, "New Girl" is determined to give you all of the Fat Schmidt you can stand. So... Yay?
Working Against Him: The Schmidt Hype has died down a little bit. Or a lot bit. There was actually Schmidt tie-in book last year. Seems like so long ago, doesn't it?
