Emmy Nomination Preview 2013 - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy
It took seven nominees to fill this category last year
Zooey Deschanel of 'New Girl'
Zooey Deschanel, "New Girl"
Nomination Status: Nominated last year, better this year.
In Her Favor: For most of the first season, "New Girl" struggled to write for its main character, over-relying on "Isn't she adorkable?" shorthand that often left Jess feeling like a construct rather than a human. The writing improved in the second season and Zooey Deschanel's performance improved as well, even if that meant that she had a bit less wackiness. Like every other "New Girl" star, I'm pointing to "Chicago" as the episode that gave her the most to do. I hope that episode also gets a nomination for guest star Margo Martindale. I think you could also point to the cabin-in-the-woods episode with David Walton, the episode featuring Steve Howrey as strong Jess-centric episodes. Or you can just concentrate on the Nick-and-Jess episodes like everybody else is gonna do.
Working Against Her: I may be being naive, but I feel like Zooey Deschanel weathered the adorkable/Siri backlash and now she's just the lead actress at the center of a very good ensemble. Or am I wrong? Do people still hate Zooey and find her an impediment to watching "New Girl" and is that why ratings have declined even as quality has increased? Dunno.
