Emmy Nomination Preview 2013 - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy
It took seven nominees to fill this category last year
Lena Dunham of 'Girls'
Lena Dunham, "Girls"
Nomination Status: Last year there were three locks. I think Dunham makes it four this year..
In Her Favor: Although she didn't win in any of the categories, last year Lena Dunham made Emmy history with her writing, directing, acting and producing Emmy nominations. Dunham wore all of the same hats this season and stirred up many of the same controversies and, if you ask me, she delivered even more highlight episodes. To me, this was a much better season for Lena Dunham, Actress than the first. The cocaine episode was pure comedy, the Patrick Wilson episode was an introspective two-hander and, as the character's OCD grew worse and worse, the end of the season found Hannah and Dunham going some dark and messed up places. The Golden Globe win is nice, but meaningless. I think Dunham had this nomination set anyway.
Working Against Her: There will apparently always be a large subset of viewers who hate Lena Dunham, who deride her for her constant nakedness, who think that the Patrick Wilson episode was self-indulgent twaddle, who think that the OCD arc somehow minimized a very real problem and made it into a character quirk. Those people make me a little sad, but I don't think that for this year they'll have any impact on Dunham's Emmy chances.
