Emmy Nomination Preview 2013 - Outstanding Comedy Series
Can anything dethrone 'Modern Family'?
Nomination Status: HBO's polarizing favorite will probably remain stable.
In Its Favor: If you liked "Girls" in its first season, you probably still liked "Girls" in its second season, even if you didn't love all of the things Lena Dunham tried this time around. To me, the standout episodes of the second season -- the cocaine episode, the Patrick Wilson episode, the road trip, the dark and somewhat depressing finale -- were as good or better than anything in the first season. If enough voters agree, it should be easy for "Girls" to repeat. Put the Comedy Series win at the Golden Globes in the "slight plus" category, mostly just reminding voters that there's more to the show than just Lena Dunham.
Working Against It: As I said in my Lena Dunham slide, she's polarizing and the show is polarizing and those people who dislike it love to talk about how much they hate it. It's not that I'm trying to say those people might sway voters, only to note that just because I'm in a little bubble that mostly likes "Girls" doesn't mean I'm not aware there are other negative bubbles out there. It's only a small negative bubble, mind you. The vast bubble is the bubble that doesn't watch "Girls," has never seen a second of "Girls" and couldn't begin to tell you whether or not they like or hate "Girls." That that bubble is so big also hurts the show.
