'The Illusionist' vs. 'The Prestige'
"The Illusionist" (Yari Film Group) - Aug. 18, 2006
Global box office: $88 million
"The Prestige" (Touchstone Pictures) - Oct. 20, 2006
Global box office: $110 million
The result: Though Neil Burger's lower-budgeted "The Illusionist" beat Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige" to theaters by two months and subsequently became a minor critical and commercial hit, it didn't put a damper on the box-office of the latter film, which finished up with a tidy $110 million worldwide (on a reported $40 million budget). Indeed, after the dust had cleared, both titles - each of them star-driven period films taking place in the world of stage magic - could be counted as clear winners for their respective creators. A neat trick, that.
