'Prefontaine' vs. 'Without Limits'

'Prefontaine' vs. 'Without Limits'

"Prefontaine" (Hollywood Pictures) - January 24, 1997
Box office: $589, 000

"Without Limits" (Warner Bros. ) -  Sept. 11, 1998
Box office: $777,000

The result:
Why on Earth did we get two different films about Steve Prefontaine, the champion long-distance runner who tragically died at 24? Jared Leto played the athlete in "Prefontaine," while Billy Crudup tackled the role a year later in the Tom Cruise-produced "Without Limits." Was there a bet involved or something? Although both films are well worth watching, there's no real winner here; the two box office totals combined don't even come close to either film's budget. Hollywood is so strange sometimes.
