Directors and actors who need to work together again
We'd love to see these collaborations once more, please
Leos Carax and Juliette Binoche
Previous collaborations: “Bad Blood” (1986); “Lovers on the Bridge” (1991)
Why Carax should: After far too many years in the wilderness, the French iconoclast returned in grand style with last year’s “Holy Motors” – a film that caught the attention of a lot of film buffs previously unfamiliar with his work. Hopefully, they’ve since caught up, but what better way to capitalize on his re-exposure than a reunion with his former muse and lover – who, in the 22 years since their rapturous Paris romance “Lovers on the Bridge,” has since become the grande dame of French cinema? It’d be a major arthouse event.
Why Binoche should: From Abbas Kiarostami to Michael Haneke to Bruno Dumont, Binoche has become a go-to actress for rigorous auteurs looking to inject some star quality into their films – but it would be nice to remind people that she was on the Carax train way before he got hip. The director actually wrote Kylie Minogue’s “Holy Motors” role for Binoche, as an intended reprise of her “Lovers” duet with Denis Lavant, which would have been a poignant moment. She turned him down, but here’s hoping he keeps asking.
