'Dazed and Confused' (1993)

Not a huge hit on its initial release, writer/director Richard Linklater's slice-of-life film about a day in the life of a group of teenagers in 1970s Texas has achieved "cult-classic" status in the intervening years, and for good reason. While the cast of young up-and-comers (led by a scene-stealing Matthew McConaughey) achieve just the right pitch with their naturalistic performances, much of the credit simply must go to Linklater, who managed to evoke the Me Decade without cheapening it through the use of too-obvious period signifiers. Because of this restraint - audacious in its own quiet way - "Dazed and Confused" achieves a timeless quality that could never be duplicated in a remake - unless, of course, Linklater decided to try his hand at the concept in a different decade. Of course, then it wouldn't really qualify as a remake at all.
