'Seven' (1995)

Surely you could never replicate the shock ending of the original in a remake, though it's not too hard to envision an updated version featuring a young up-and-comer in the Brad Pitt vein and a revamped plot utilizing the "seven deadly sins" conceit (and even, perhaps, a completely different third-act twist). And yet the power of "Seven" lay in the rare symbiosis between director David Fincher and his stars, not to mention director of photography Darius Khondji, who created a crepuscular, deeply unnerving world through his highly-influential use of the bleach bypass film processing technique. And yet "Seven" is far more than the sum of its parts; there's something deeply nasty and disturbed about the film, something that gets right under your skin, and I doubt anyone could do it better than the team that was assembled here.
