'Face/Off' (1997)
One of the greatest American action films of the decade, John Woo's "Face/Off" benefited greatly from the Hong Kong director's substantial degree of creative control (something he didn't enjoy on his two previous American efforts, "Hard Target" and "Broken Arrow") in addition to the go-for-broke performances by leads John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Of course, the film's easy-sell premise makes it a natural for a remake (throw an up-and-coming action director and two big name stars in a blender and watch the receipts pour in!), albeit one sapped of the creative inspiration that powered the original.
