'E.T.' (1982)

Why it's so great: The highest-grossing film of the decade, "E.T." is a timeless classic no matter how you slice it. It's also one of the last effects-heavy films from the class of '82 not to be threatened with a remake/reboot/sequel ("The Thing," "Blade Runner," and "Tron" all come to mind).

Remake-o-meter says: Not bloody likely. Despite big advances in special effects since the original (ugh, just imagine a George Lucas-style CG E.T. jumping around), it's tough to imagine any execs having the balls to pitch a remake...unless it's Steven Spielberg himself, and even then...it's all about the zeitgeist.
