Biggest winners and losers of 2013: Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, 'Breaking Bad' and more
WINNER: Alfonso Cuaron
What Went Right in 2013: Did you see "Gravity"? Holy cow. Perhaps the single greatest example of the impact his work had came after a special screening that Warner Bros. arranged for other filmmakers before the film came out. To a person, the various filmmakers invited all hit social media with a general "OH MY GOD WHAT JUST HAPPENED?" attitude that says it all about just how revolutionary his work in the film is. You're free to like or dislike the script, but Cuaron's work is a literal reinvention of visual language, and about as strong a showcase for what modern tools can do to set directors free.
What's Ahead in 2014: His new series "Believe" is set to premiere on NBC, and he directed the pilot. He's also going to spend the next few months busy picking up one award after another. Here's hoping that even as we speak, he is preparing his next magic trick.
