In many ways, the perfect Tom Cruise role, and one of the few to let him embrace that odd alien quality that has made him so compelling on film over the years. Vincent is exceptionally good at what he does, but it's made him something less than whole, and it seems like a trade-off he was willing to make. He has that same laser focus that Cruise always brings to his work, but it's disconcerting here. The intensity makes him seem unstoppable, and its not until the end of the movie that he's revealed as flesh and blood, merely human-sized. Seeing how easily Cruise can turn his smolder to menace makes us wish he'd play more truly evil characters, because he seems completely at home in this bad man's skin.
