Ups and downs on the telecast, as always
Worst: Ellen's monologue
Listen, Ellen DeGeneres is incredibly talented. She can be very funny whether it's hosting her daytime TV show or doing stand up, but she has to be the most conservative Oscars host since Johnny Carson. And Carson may have delivered more zingers than she does. No one expected Ellen to become a topical comedian or pull a Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, but her monologue was a terrible sign of things to come. Outside of one good "12 Years A Slave" joke it was unmemorable and unimaginative. Patton Oswalt was OK hosting the Spirit Awards on Saturday, but it was miles and away better than this.
