"Lifeboat" (1944)
Nominations (3):
Best Director
Best Writing, Original Story
Best Cinematography, Black-and-White
Hitchcock was always able to make the most out of seemingly limited situations, and "Lifeboat" is a great example. An entire cast of characters is stranded on a lifeboat after their ship sinks in the film's opening moments, and the film remains captivating throughout. Of course, plenty of that is owed to writer John Steinbeck, who received an Oscar nomination for his original story. Hitchcock put his ensemble through a lot as they battled motion sickness, pneumonia and the elements to achieve a level of reality. He was ultimately nominated for the experimental work by his fellow directors while the cinematography was also recognized amongst the black-and-white entries, which yielded 10 nominees that year. Your Best Picture winner: "Going My Way."
